‘TFP ORIGINALS’ 2017 - £100 Live Fantasy Draft in Southampton

@Outsiders68 - Sean - are you still running your live draft league again this year? May be interested if the draft date works instead and there are any spare spots.

No full day I’m afraid

Sorry to lose you James - hopefully it is just for this year and we can get a date to suit in 2018
cheers, Jon

10 signed up (welcome home Dean!) - 6 to go, or 5 if Kieron can figure out the combination lock on his wallet

Noel and I are nagging a few contacts, but any interest from TFP regulars is welcome

Still looking for a few managers for this

Finally back online with a PC that seems to be working so am now gonna get on this - mailed my first person a massive e-mail today - would love him to join us but not sure how big into fantasy football he is - I know he loves NFL, he is actually the one that got me into the game as a kid. He played (I never did) - he’s my cousin.

I’ve sent him a big message on FB and a link to here - hoping he will at least take a look and if he shows interest told him there’s room for other mates to. Think he lives in Twickenham these days.

I will also direct message people I have seen on social media that are from the local area to this years draft and said they like fantasy NFL - see how that goes. Then I’ll spread out further a field.

I will also get a sweeping e-mail off to all my fantasy games contacts that I think like NFL.
Last but not least think FISO might be a place to at list post a link to here - I know it hasn’t really gotten much traction in the past but they are serious fantasy gamers - just I’m not a regular poster on there so have no real kudos. :football:

Hope this league fills ASAP. It would be good to get 2 or 3 new players. If anyone out there is thinking of joining but hesitant for any reason, feel free to direct message me and I’ll try to answer any questions.

Cheers Alan, looking forward to it! Seeing the pictures made up my mind, I hope it does the same for others as well so that we can get to 14 or 16!

Just to confirm to everyone: we have 11 signed up for the league, and a few others interested (who I will be chasing to make a decision one way or the other!).

I am going to end recruitment of managers next Saturday, 19 August. This will allow me to make final confirmation of all league set up such as prize money and whether we are going to split into decisions.

Once I have ended recruitment, I will switch my attention to the detailed plans for the draft itself, and also for social events on Friday and Saturday evenings. To be clear - there is no obligation to attend anything other than the draft itself - but I will be organising a drink on Friday night for anyone who is in town, and I will be organising beers and booking a restaurant on Saturday evening for anyone who is sticking around after the draft.

Up to 13 managers now, only 3 spaces left. Don’t miss out

Just to confirm. We have 13 managers signed up. I need to start confirming details for everyone, so I am still looking for a final manager to make this league an even number.
I have updated post 4 above, to confirm the exact prize money we are playing for, and to confirm the structure of the playoffs. I am also about to post a poll below, so that people can let me know their plans for socialising before and after the draft!

If anyone is going to be in Southampton on the Friday evening before the draft, and wants to meet up, let me know (this will probably be a fairly casual couple of beers - if the weather is nice, I will make it a walk round two or three pubs to point out some of the sights of the historic old town!)

On Saturday evening, I am expecting the draft to finish between 5 and 6. After that I am planning to go for a drink or two, plus a curry, in town. If anyone is interested in joining me, let me know. Curry finished by about 900 / 930 if anyone wants to plan for heading home late Saturday.

Your answers by the end of Saturday 26th would be very much appreciated so I can get on with planning.

  • I am just around for the draft
  • I’ll be joining you Friday evening only
  • I’ll be joining you Saturday evening only
  • I’m a beer monster and will be out both evenings

#Saturday’s draft day

Folks, as we are only a few days from the draft – some extra details to help you prepare, and a reminder of some notes I’d given you earlier.

The draft will take place in the “Hampshire Room” on the ground floor of the Hotel Ibis Southampton Centre – address is West Quay Road, Southampton, SO15 1RA.

We have the room from 11:00 to 19:00. I will be there from 11:00 to make sure everything is set up for us. I would like managers to arrive for 12:00 if at all possible please – we have a few bits of admin to run through to get us ready for the draft to start at 1:00.

The room has plenty of space. There is free tea, coffee, and water. Several plug sockets for chargers. Free wifi. There is a small bar on the ground floor, food can also be ordered from there. There is free parking for us at the hotel (but I need to get registration numbers and hand them in to reception so they know which cars are ours).

###The plan for 12 till 1 is:
• Introductions – we have a mixed bag of old friends and also some new faces, so I’m hoping everyone is here in time to meet and greet all their rivals
• Grab a seat – work out who you want to sit and chat with for the day (or who you want to avoid !)
• Quick recap of last season’s results
• Draft position – here’s the set up, I will explain it again on the day in case this doesn’t make sense. All managers have a budget of 200 points to use during the season for picking up players from the waiver wire. Those points can also be used in trades. And these points can also be used on draft day to bid for draft position. Every manager will submit a secret bid of anywhere from 0 to 200 points. Whatever bid each manager makes will be deducted from their season’s budget of points. I’ll then check all the bids – whoever made the highest bid will have first choice of which spot they want to draft from. Second highest bid will have their pick from whatever is left, and so on. If two or managers make the same bid, I will draw lots for who gets priority. Essentially you can aim for your perfect draft slot, but reduce your chance of grabbing players off waivers during the season – or you can keep hold of your bidding budget, but at the cost of having last choice of where you draft from.
• Grab a drink, order food from the bar if you’d like (you’ll have a chance later too)

###The plan from 1 till 6 is:
• 16 rounds of drafting !
• We’ll be doing 4 rounds of draft picks, followed by a short break (for fresh air, to order some food or drink, or to panic about how bad your picks look…). Then 4 more rounds, then a break, and so on
• There are three breaks (at the end of rounds 4, 8 and 12). At the start of each break, I will ask you an NFL trivia question. The closest answer will win a prize (I have six football themed prizes for you to choose between. One prize per person so if you win a prize I will ask you to sit out of any subsequent questions)
• To start with, everyone will have 90 seconds maximum to make their pick. Based on past experience, this should see us finish between 5:30 and 6:00. If we are falling behind schedule, I have the option to reduce the time per pick – hopefully won’t come to that!
• In case you are struggling to work out who you want (or the manager before you stole the guys you wanted…), you have one time out. If you use it you get an additional 90 seconds breathing time.
• If your 90 seconds expires, and you have already used your time out, then the manager after you can come up and make their pick (and the one after, and the one after…). This very rarely happens, but the threat is always there to stop people dawdling!

###The plan from 6 onwards is:
• At the hotel, we’ll have the inevitable initial post mortem on how the draft went, and will also say cheerio to anyone who is leaving us then
• We’ll clear out the function room, and wander into the city centre for a beer or two. Then a curry, and then maybe another beer or two. None of this will be too far from either the Ibis or from the central railway station, in case anyone needs to leave part way through the evening
• On Sunday, Noel and I will upload the draft results into the NFL Fantasy site. We will update each manager’s waiver budget to take account of what people bid for draft position. And we will hit the big red button to randomise the schedule of match ups for the season! Then we are good to go…
