Originals 2025 Draft weekend

Evenin’ all…
The twelfth annual Originals Draft Day is only a month away, so it’s time I put together some details for you all about the weekend.

What I need from you is
• An NFL prediction by 6th August, which will determine draft order (SEE POINT 3 BELOW)
• Confirmation by 22nd August at the latest if you want to join the post-draft evening meal (SEE POINT 4 BELOW)

(1)
Based on previous years, at least a few of you will rock up on the Friday evening. I will be out and about for a few beers and a casual catch-up and hope to see some of you. I won’t be booking anything on the Friday, so there’s no need for anyone to make a commitment to be there – just keep in touch if you want to know which pub to meet at!

(2)
The draft will take place at the Mayflower Village pub, Commercial Road Southampton (SO15 1GE) on Saturday August 30th. It’s a 5 minute walk from the Central Railway station. They have a nice basement bar which we have to ourselves till 6:00.

There’s a little bit of on-street parking very close to the pub, but a better bet for drivers is probably the West Park Road multi-storey which is again about a 5 minute walk away.

The pub doesn’t open till 12:00, I’ll be there on the dot. Could I ask managers to try to arrive for 12:15 or earlier please. (I’m looking at you, Adam…). We’ll do all the usual prep and intros, give everyone a chance to order lunch – lots of burgers, pizzas and other pub grub available, and will start the draft absolutely no later than 1:00 but ideally a little before.

(3)
Because we need to make a prompt start, we will be deciding the draft order in advance this year.
There are 16 games in week 1 of the pre-season, from Thursday 7th through to Sunday 10th August. By no later than Wednesday 6th August send me a note with the three teams you think will score most points in pre-season week 1. Whoever’s three teams score most points in total will have first choice of draft spot.

The small print:

  • You can message me on Sleeper, or Discord, or the Fan Pub Forum website, or WhatsApp. I don’t mind, just message me.
  • In the event of two people getting the same total, the tiebreaker will be who messaged me first – so don’t delay, guess today!
  • I will guess last, so I have least benefit from the tiebreaker
  • Anyone who hasn’t messaged me by the end of Wednesday 6th will be assigned three random shit teams i.e. the Raiders

The games:

  • CLE @ CAR
  • DAL @ LAR
  • DET @ ATL
  • DEN @ SF
  • CIN @ PHI
  • HOU @ MIN
  • IND @ BAL
  • KC @ ARI
  • LVR @ SEA
  • MIA @ CHI
  • NO @ LAC
  • NYG @ BUF
  • NYJ @ GB
  • PIT @ JAX
  • TEN @ TB
  • WAS @ NE

(4)
Assuming we can get the draft done before 5:30, we’ll then be able to chill and either have a draft debrief or watch the Premier League game (Leeds – Newcastle, I think).

I’ll book a meal at a venue a walkable distance from the draft venue at about 7:30 (those of you catching a train – the meal should be done by 9:30 meaning you can catch a 10:00 train no problem.

Let me know no later than Friday 22nd if you are coming to the meal. (…and feel free to let me know if there’s a cuisine you particularly hate, I will do my best to accommodate!)

(5)
After the draft, the league will run like the last few years:
• 14-week regular season
• Week 15 quarter final (the number 1 seed will choose their opponent from the other 7 playoff qualifiers. Then the other six playoff qualifiers will be paired off automatically, highest remaining seed plays lowest remaining seed, second highest plays second lowest etc)
• Week 16 semi-final
• Week 17 final

Prizes are as follows:
• Winner - £1,000
• Runner Up - £400
• Losing Semi-finalists - £125 x two people
• Highest weekly score in weeks 1 to 14 - £173.16, to commemorate the amazing achievement that Simon doesn’t mention often enough
• And a few spot prizes on draft day…

Cheers, Jon

I’m coming live, I am in for the meal - arriving on the Saturday coming via Barnham scheduled to arrive at 11:03 - if pub not open to 12 maybe I can find a Greggs for breakie?

I am in for the meal but am booked on an advance train tickets so tied to the SWR 22:30 back to Clapham Junction so must make that. Do not have any allergies so will try whatever you decide.

Greggs is a bit of a walk, I will have a think of where else nearby might do you a breakfast

I just like their Sausage Rolls, a hot chocolate and a nice Belgian bun. Be worth the walk if I have the time, but yeah local knowledgeable suggestions welcomed also.

All predictions in very promptly, thanks for that! I will update the latest scores on here over the weekend.

Chicago the most popular pick - 5 people chose them. Buffalo, Cincy, Detroit and GB right behind. 11 teams went unpicked…

Also - I’ve already had 5 people confirm they will be around on the Friday evening, and 9 on the Saturday. Should be good fun

Thursday games:
Philly win a high scoring game against the Bengals. Great news for @Rick_Spangle who has both teams! Also good for @Flacco2012 who picked the Eagles.
Less good for me (Seahawks -23) and especially @Outsiders68 (Indy - 16). But still a long way to go, six people haven’t even started yet

Friday games:
Patriots scored a whopping 48 points… and not of of us picked them. Meanwhile I got lumbered with 10 from the Falcons :confounded:
@Rick_Spangle leads - though he has used all three teams, so will surely be overtaken? Still five players yet to start

Three teams used
78 - Andy

Two teams used
44 - Shani
44 - Dan
41 - Adam
41 - Noel
37 - Robert
33 - Jon

One team
27 - Ian
24 - Sam
16 - Sean
10 - Ben

No teams used yet
George, Al, Toby, Jordan, Chris

Detroit @ Atlanta being suspended and cancelled with full 4th Quarter still to go will of left points on the field for those teams.

Think that will set a precedent going forward now when what looks like a serious injury to a player in a game, rest of players will now not play on.

I truly hope Morice Norris is not paralysed. My thoughts are with him and his family - must be so shocking seeing someone you love get hurt on TV or live in a stadium and not knowing how badly or if they will be okay.

Lots of games Saturday night. Four people fell for Green Bay and were rewarded with 10 points…
Most people have had all three teams play now - Toby has the clubhouse lead. Everyone has had at least one team play for them.

Congratulations to Toby who will have first pick of draft spot!

Wow, under 4 days till the draft starts… I had better start checking out who Peyton Manning is throwing to nowadays…!

Some last details…

Friday evening

I think that Dan, Jordan, Shacko and I are all around - a couple of others said they were possibles, the more the merrier.

Dan and I are meeting at the Giddy Bridge on London Road at about 6.00, if people want to meet us there. We will go on to a couple of other pubs in the Bedford Place area, there are also several restaurants (Indian, Chinese, Pizza, Burger…) very close together round there. For anyone rolling up after 6, I will keep my phone handy, just send a message and I will let you know where we have got to

Saturday afternoon

Reminders… we are drafting at The Mayflower Village on Commercial Road, it’s about a 5 minute walk from the railway station, and also from the West Park Road car park which is the best bet for drivers. The place opens at 12.00 and I’d suggest getting there at opening time or soon after. We will be ordering lunch, doing the usual assorted admin, handing out the first spot prize, and aiming to make the first pick at 12.45 (we have a few second string punters lined up ready for any late arrivals..!)

We’ll have five rounds of picks, a break for refreshments and a second spot prize - then five more picks, another break, another prize - and then the final five picks.

Sean - let us know if you need a hand ferrying the draft board from your car, I’m sure we can arrange a couple of volunteers to pop over to help.

Saturday evening

Based on previous years, we’ll be done before half past five. Some people will want to have a detailed debrief of the draft, others will be switching focus to the late Premier League game (Leeds v Newcastle). Plan A will be to stay in the draft venue to watch the game, but there are other pubs nearby if we decide we want a change of scene.

(The pub we are at also has a dart board, shuffleboard, table football etc)

14 of the 16 managers are staying for the evening meal. We are at the Blue Island, about a five minute walk away. It’s a Greek place that does a set 10 course meal, there should be something to suit all tastes (and Andy, I’ve warned them about the dairy avoidance, they will tweak one or two of the courses to avoid your guts exploding on the way home!)

Just for Noel

If you arrive early enough, leave Southampton station by the Platform 4 exit (which is very probably the one you’ll arrive at anyway). Head up the hill towards town, the Greggs is about a 10 minute walk. It is then also about another 10 minutes back to the opposite side of the station for the draft.

Just for Sam

Hope all your assorted plans for last weekend worked out! I will be putting the draft online so you can follow picks. As mentioned above, basic plan is 12.45 start, and a pause after 5 and 10 rounds - but I will also stay in touch over WhatsApp. Don’t get too drunk poolside, we need you to be sniping Ian’s picks regularly!

See you all soon, looking forward to it!
