New Dynasty League - Poseidon League

As discussed on Discord chat, been toying with a new dynasty league which I’m trying to get as close to real life rules as we can (slight concern it’s over complicated!). It’s still a work in progress and open to suggestion but just wanted to gauge interest before I went too far. Let me know what you think, either on here or (preferably) on discord. Here are the rough details (as I say, still work in progress):

Basic League Setup & Rules

  • Salary cap and contract league. Teams will be required to stay within both salary cap and maximum contract years at all times.
  • Regular Season salary cap $1000.
  • Off-season salary cap $1200.
  • Teams will be required to be at the regular season cap limit 1 week prior to the start of the season (Date TBC).
  • Maximum contract years on team will be 75 years at all times.
  • Standard scoring with 0.5 PPR
  • League rules will be revealed annually. Any changes will be put to a league vote with majority winning.
  • There will be penalties (TBC) if a roster is over salary cap whilst a game is being played.
  • Team owners must actively participate in the league and respond promptly to any trade or other requests.
  • Team owners are encouraged to take an active part in league discussions on The Fan Pub discord site.
  • Entry fee for the league is £45, which includes a contribution to MFL league fees.
  • An additional £20 will be required as a non-refundable deposit on the following years’ entry fee.
  • Any queries or complaints should be raised with the league commissioner, Mark Dimmock, preferably through Discord or alternatively via markdimmock812@gmail.com.
  • All league rules are open for discussion with league owners and any changes will be considered and, if required, voted on.

Divisions & Playoffs

  • The league setup will be as follows:
    • Regular season will run week’s 1 – 13, with playoffs in
    • If 12 teams…
      • 3 divisions of 4 teams.
      • Winner of each division makes playoffs.
      • The top 3 ranked remaining teams, regardless of division, will make the playoffs as wild cards.
      • Top 2 ranked division winners will be seeded and receive a first round bye.
      • 3 wild card teams & 1 remaining division winner will play in the wild card round in week 14, which will be seeded based on record with division winner taking number 1 seed.
      • Seeded playoff semi-final will take place in week 15.
      • Final will take place in week 16.
    • If 14 teams…
      • 2 divisions of 7 teams.
      • Winner of each division makes playoffs.
      • The top 5 ranked remaining teams, regardless of division, will make the playoffs as wild cards.
      • The top ranked division winner will receive a first round bye.
      • 5 wild card teams & 1 remaining division winner will play in the wild card round in week 14, which will be seeded based on record with division winner taking number 1 seed.
      • Seeded playoff semi-final will take place in week 15.
      • Final will take place in week 16.

Rosters

  • Roster set up as follows:
    • 1 QB
    • 1 RB
    • 2 WR
    • 1 TE
    • 3 Flex (RB/WR/TE)
    • 12 Bench Places
    • 5 Taxi Squad Places (1st & 2nd year players only)
    • 3 Injured Reserve Places (Players must be on official IR list)
  • During the off-season 5 extra bench places will be available to teams.
  • Rosters will be required to be reduced to the regular season roster limit 1 week prior to the start of the season (Date TBC).

Start-up Drafts

  • Veteran start-up draft by auction using salary dollars, where the winning bid becomes the salary for the player on your roster.
  • Initial rookie draft is snake draft with 3rd round reversal.
    • Drafted rookies assigned a contract value based on draft position (see contracts section for values).
    • All undrafted rookies become free agents, and are treated with the same rules as veteran free agents.
  • Both drafts will be slow drafts conducted on MFL.
  • There will be a period following the conclusion of both drafts where contract values will be required to be assigned to players.
  • Start date and order of drafts to be decided once the league is full.

Subsequent Year Drafts

  • Each year 2 drafts will be held, 1 for free agents & 1 for rookies.
  • Free agent draft will be an auction draft using salary cap dollars, where the winning bid becomes the salary for the player on your roster.
  • Rookie draft will be a straight draft based on finishing position, with lowest ranked team drafting first.

Free Agents

  • Outside of the off-season period between the end of the previous league year and the conclusion of both drafts, all free agent players will be available to pick up as free agents using a WAB based waiver system.
  • Values bid for players will be the salary value assigned to that player if your waiver bid is successful.
  • When a player is picked up on waivers an automatic contract length of 1 year will be assigned. This contract length can be extended up to a maximum of 5 years by notification to the league commissioner within 48 hours of the pickup otherwise they will remain on a 1 year contract.

Contracts

Veteran Contracts

  • Veteran salary values are decided based on the value bid for the player in either the veteran free agent auction, or value bid for a free agent player on waivers.
  • All veterans can be assigned a contract length up to a maximum of 5 years. You can manage contract years however you see fit within the allowed maximum of 75 years.
    • Contract values must be assigned either during the contract assignment period following the veteran draft, or immediately after picking up a player on waivers.
    • Salary cap penalties will be incurred if players are released with contract remaining (see Penalties section).

Rookie Contracts

  • Rookies are assigned a salary value based on where they are taken in the rookie draft.
  • Rookie salary values are as follows (based on 12 team league):

  • Above values have been kept low to reflect the nature of rookie contracts in the NFL.
  • Total year 1 value of all rookie contracts per team equals $75 regardless of draft position. From year 2, total year 1 values will vary based on draft position.
  • First round rookie players given 4 year contract with 1 year option.
  • Remaining drafted rookies given straight 4 year contract.

Contract Expiry

  • Contracts are not extendable. All players whose contracts expire will enter the free agency auction (where the current owner is welcome to bid on the player).
  • There are, however, 2 ways to avoid your player hitting free agency. You can apply either:
    • Franchise Tag (maximum 1 per year)
      • Players will be salaried the average of the five highest salaries in the league at the player’s position, or 120 percent of the player’s cap number from the previous season, whichever is greater.
    • Transition Tender (maximum 1 per year):
      • Players can assign the following levels of tender, with player receiving appropriate salary:
        • 1st round – salary average of top 10 players at position.
        • 2nd round – salary average of top 15 players at position.
        • 3rd round – salary average of top 20 players at position.
        • 4th round – salary average of top 25 players at position.
        • 5th round – salary average of all rostered players at position (excluding taxi squad players).
      • Players will go into a separate transition tender auction where other teams can bid.
      • If no bid exceeds the tender salary assigned to the player the team retains the player on a 1 year contract.
      • If a salary does exceed the tender salary, the highest bidder sets the contract years offered.
      • The current owner can then choose to match or exceed the offer (both salary & contract years) at no cost.
      • If the owner chooses not to match the offer, they will receive a draft pick as compensation from the winning bidder based on the level of tender placed.

Salary Penalties

  • Players released with contract remaining incur a salary cap penalty based on contract years remaining, applied in current season only.
    • 5 years – 200%
    • 4 years – 160%
    • 3 years – 120%
    • 2 years – 80%
    • 1 year – 40%
  • Salary cap penalties have been set to punish the release of longer contract players, whilst keeping this easy to maintain.
  • There will be a 2 week cut period at the start of every league year where players with 1 year remaining on their contract (following the reduction of contract year values) can be cut free of charge.
  • During the cut period, players on longer contracts can also be cut at a reduced penalty which will be applied against the new league year salary cap. The salary cut rates in this period are:
    • 2 years remaining – 25%
    • 3 years remaining – 50%
    • 4 years remaining – 75%
  • Players cut during the pre-season roster cut down (1 week prior to start of the season) will still be subject to the full penalties detailed in the first point of this section.
  • Where a player officially retires from the NFL they can be cut without penalty.

Other Contract Rules

  • All players rostered at the start of the league year will have salaries increased by 10% and contract length reduced by 1 year.
  • Taxi squad players are not considered part of the active roster and therefore do not count against the salary cap or total contract years.
    • On promotion to the active roster players will count fully towards both the salary cap and total contract years.
  • Injured reserve players count fully towards both the salary cap and contract years.

Taxi Squad

  • There are 5 taxi squad places which can be used for rookies and second year players only.
  • Players on the Taxi squad do not count towards the salary cap or total contract years.
  • Other teams can attempt to claim players from opposing teams’ taxi squads.
    • Teams wishing to claim players must advise both the players’ current team owner and the commissioner of their claim.
    • If the existing team wishes to retain the player they must promote them to the active roster within 72 hours, otherwise they will be transferred to the new team.

Injured Reserve

  • There are 3 Injured Reserve spots available for each team.
  • To be eligible to be placed on Injured Reserve, players must have an official IR designation with the NFL.
  • Injured Reserve players count fully towards both the salary cap and contract years, however, this will allow players to pick up replacement players without breaching roster size limits.
