Currently my new avatar does not display on posts, I suspect that it needs to meet some tough legislation about size, quality and shape?

There aren’t strict requirements for avatars, basically if you upload an image I think you can then crop it on the site and it will automatically resize it and save it. Seems like it’s working for you now anyway, perhaps the old avatar was cached for awhile.
